A hand carved vintage Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson chair. It has a slatted back and a panel seat, which has been beautifully adzed. The signature mouse is carved onto one front leg.
Quite an unusual chair in design. Potentially commissioned for a school. It is very similar in style to the library chairs Leeds Girls High School commissioned Mouseman to make in the 1930s (these chairs can be seen in the last picture above - click on the picture to enlarge). Except they had slung leather seats that Mouseman typically used in that period. The library furniture was sold at auction in 2008 and went considerably above the higher end of the estimate with the librarian's desk making a whopping £18,000. Although this chair is similar in design, it is obviously a lot later.
The chair is in very good condition with just some light wear, all in line with age and use. It is solid and structurally sound with no movement in the joints.
