Welcome to the Yorkshire Mouse online shop

A wonderful pair of Don 'Foxman' Craven armchairs with a fantastic full fox signature carved onto one armchair. It is quite unusual to see a Don Craven piece carved with such a large, detailed fox, it really is excellent. The head and legs have been carved in such a way that makes it look three dimensional. On close inspection, you can see the fox's face has even been carved with a nose and whiskers. Additionally, the eyes have been carved so well, the fox looks as if it's actually watching you. Superb.

The condition of both armchairs is very good, especially given that they are around 60 years old. The chair with the carved fox has what looks like a small chip under one arm, which can be seen in the pictures. However, when looking at it under a magnifying glass it looks more like a small natural knot has either been removed or has fallen out rather than a chip. There is also a small natural split in the grain on the front left leg and some wear to the front rush rail where people have rested their feet - not really noticeable and all in line with age and use. The fox signature is perfect with no damage. The other armchair just has very light surface wear and no damage.

Both of the seats on the armchairs have been beautifully reupholstered with black leather, which is in perfect condition - the colour really compliments the dark oak.

Overall, a stunning pair of 1960s / 1970s fox armchairs. The signature fox has been carved to just one chair, so best to keep them together rather than split them up.

Each chair measures 96.5 cm high. The width measures 58.5 cm and the depth 51 cm. The height of the seats measure 49 cm high.

Don Craven was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He left Thompson's workshop in the early 1960s and set up Aldborough Woodcrafts with another ex Mouseman Craftsman, Bob Hunter. Bob later went on to establish Wren Cabinet Makers in Thirlby, first using the tortoise as his signature, but later changing it to the wren. He is now known as Wrenman.

Please note, Don Craven was the original 'Foxman' who shouldn't be confused with Malcolm 'Foxman' Pipes who adopted the fox signature after Craven retired. He only carved a fox head, not a full fox.
