A superb early pair of bespoke Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson dark oak bookends. These bookends were commissioned in the 1940s and are a one-off, so they are very rare. The signature mouse with front paws has been carved on one bookend (it was common with the early bookends to only carve one mouse on one bookend rather than to both). Each bookend has the letter 'G' carved onto it. They came from a family that had inherited them from another family member that had passed away. They had been in the same family for over 80 years. They have been expertly carved and are a beautiful dark colour with excellent patination.
The condition is very good. They are over 80 years old so have some signs of wear. There are small nicks to the base of one bookend, and one corner of the same bookend looks to have had another nick smoothed out, not really noticeable, but should be pointed out. It is rare to find early Mouseman bookends in perfect condition.
All in all, they are an absolutely wonderful pair of one-off early Mouseman bookends. They are very rare, you will not see another pair.
