Welcome to the Yorkshire Mouse online shop

An excellent pair of rare 1930s Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson bookends, hand carved from oak with a signature mouse to each bookend. The dark colour of the oak is absolutely wonderful, almost like dark chocolate. The mice have also been beautifully well carved and are a mirror image of each other.

Regarding condition, there are some old chips, especially to the edges, some are wax filled, some are not. There is also one natural split in the grain on the back of one bookend, not really noticeable, but should be pointed out (quite common with the early Mouseman pieces). On very close inspection, four faint small circular stains can be seen on the bottom of each bookend where felt pads were previously attached to protect furniture. These could be removed, but personally, as they are not really seen, especially when displayed, I think it's best to leave them, they will naturally fade in time with a regular polish and wax. Other than that, the condition is very good and commensurate with around 100 years of age and use.

The height of each bookend measures 15.5 cm. The depth is 9.7 cm. The width is 9.4 cm.

These early Mouseman bookends are quite rare to the market, so it's always great to see a finely carved pair come up in good condition with such well carved mice and fabulous patination!
