A really excellent example of a vintage Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson dark oak fruit bowl. It has been expertly carved with a fabulous plump signature mouse sitting in the centre of the bowl. The shape of the mouse looks very 1950s, but the mice were carved onto the side of the fruit bowls (just below the rim) in the fifties, so this example is more likely to be 1960s when the signature mouse was moved to the interior of the bowl. The mouse has very prominent ears and a higher back end, again reminiscent of the fifties mice. The colour of the bowl is absolutely wonderful and the patination is fantastic, the pictures really don't do it justice. In reality it is richer and darker in colour.
The condition is very good with just wear commensurate with age. There is one small crack on the rim (please see picture). This is a natural crack which has occurred due to the aging process of the oak, quite common with the early Mouseman bowls, hardly noticeable, but should be pointed out - it doesn't detract from the bowl. The diameter measures 29 cm, smaller than the contemporary bowls which measure 30.5 cm. A superb example of a Mouseman bowl.
