A wonderful, vintage oak spinning chair by Don 'Foxman' Craven - circa 1960s / 70s. It has been beautifully made with adzing to the back splat. The seat has been really well carved to provide extra comfort - see pictures. The signature fox has also been well carved in a seated position with a bushy tail to one front leg. The warm honey colour of the oak is gorgeous, and being a vintage piece, it has really great patina, which gives the piece a fabulous, glossy finish.
The condition is very good with just slight wear seen on close inspection, faint scratches etc, all commensurate with age and use. There is no movement in the joints, it's a good, solid chair and still very useable today as an occasional / hall / desk chair.
It measures 92 cm high, the width of the seat measures 36 cm, the height of the seat is 45 cm. It's a really nice, well carved original 'Foxman' piece with a lovely, seated fox signature.
Don Craven was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He left Thompson's workshop in the early 1960s and set up Aldborough Woodcrafts with another ex Mouseman Craftsman, Bob Hunter. He was the original Foxman and always carved a full seated fox with bushy tail. After Craven retired, Malcom Pipes adopted the fox signature, using just a fox mask / head.
