A rare Colin 'Beaverman' Almack spinning stool / chair, specially made to celebrate the wedding of King Charles (when he was the Prince of Wales) and Lady Diana in 1981. Almack has carved the date of the wedding, Charle's and Diana's first initials, and the heraldic badge of Prince Charles, which consists of three white ostrich feathers emerging from a gold coronet with a ribbon bearing the motto 'ich dien' (German for 'I serve'). The emblem is also associated with Wales and is used in Welsh rugby and by Welsh regiments of the British Army.
The whole chair has been exceptionally well carved, the attention to detail is fantastic. The condition is excellent with no damage. There's a bit of movement in the splat back, quite common with these earlier made spinning chairs, but the legs have no movement. It is a sturdy chair, still very useable. It displays really well as it is so ornate. The signature beaver has of course also been really well carved to the side of the splat. A wonderful piece. Only a few of these chairs were made, so they are quite rare to the market.
Colin 'Beaverman' Almack was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He worked for Thompson during the 1940s and 1950s. He set up his own workshop in 1960 and adopted the beaver as his signature.
