An early Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson reading chair with not only one, but two signature mice. Circa 1920s, possibly 1930. One mouse is on the chair itself and the other on the book rest. The mouse on the book rest has front paws. Mouseman mice with front paws are incredibly rare. They are the earliest mice and were 'undercut' so that the head and chest appear to be raised. Later mice do not have front paws. Mouseman removed them as they were frequently damaged. These early mice are normally only seen on 1920s Mouseman pieces as by 1930 Robert Thompson is believed to have changed the design of the mouse, eliminating the front paws and registering the new design as a trademark in 1931.
The chair has beautiful mustard colour cushions that really complements the dark oak colour of the chair. The oak frame has been adzed all over, which is rare to see and as a general rule only seen on the very early chairs. A fabulous, early piece.
The condition is very good with wear expected of a chair that is around 100 years old.
