A Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson Haileybury chair. Very rare to the market, the chair was originally commissioned by Haileybury School, a private boarding school set in the Hertfordshire countryside. Former prime minister Clement Atlee was a former pupil. This particular chair was originally made for use in the grand dining hall at the school, which is famous for its acoustics. Recordings of background noises in this particular hall was used in the Harry Potter films. It looks very much like the dining room at Hogwarts (see pictures). It is furnished with lots of Mouseman pieces, including a few more Haileybury chairs. Please see picture of an event organised by the school last Christmas, a few more Haileybury chairs can be seen in the background on the left-hand side.
 
This particular chair itself dates to the 1930s, and is fully adzed all over, even to the legs and rails (only seen with the early Mouseman chairs). It is in unrestored condition and even has its original leather seat. The condition is very good with just wear in line with almost 100 years of use. The leather seat has some staining, but is completely original - please note, these slung leather seats are also only seen on the early Mouseman chairs. The signature mouse has been really well carved and runs up one front leg.
 
The full height of the chair (including the back) measures 87 cm. The width is 45 cm, the depth is 43 cm. It came from a house in Battle, Hastings. The former owner had a copy of the original Mouseman receipt, dated 1940. Suggesting that Mouseman may be bought back some of the chairs from Haileybury College and sold this one to a 'Mrs R.M. King'. A photocopy of the receipt is included with the chair. Wonderful to have such provenance with an early Mouseman piece!
