A Don 'Foxman' Craven octagonal coffee table. It has been beautifully adzed to the table-top and bears Craven's signature fox to the base. The fox has been really well carved in high relief. It is in a sitting position with a bushy tail. The head has been carved in full so you can see the back of the it, which is quite unusual to see on Foxman pieces.
The condition is very good. It has one small natural split in the grain to the base, only noticeable on close inspection, some small spots and stains that would likely polish out, and the fox has a tiny nibble to one ear, which you can't really see, but you can feel. The colour of the top of the table is also a bit uneven. Other than that, it just has wear commensurate with age and use. It dates to the 1960s / 1970s. A really lovely piece. It looks just like a Mouseman octagonal coffee table, except a fox is sitting on the base instead of a mouse.
The diameter of the top of the table is 60 cm. It stands 51 cm high.
Don Craven was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He left Thompson's workshop in the early 1960s and set up Aldborough Woodcrafts with another ex Mouseman Craftsman, Bob Hunter. Bob later went on to establish Wren Cabinet Makers in Thirlby, first using the tortoise as his signature, but later changing it to the wren. He is now known as Wrenman.
