A lovely earlier made Colin 'Beaverman' Almack coffee table - circa 1960. It has been really well made with the signature beaver carved in high relief running up one leg.
The beaver is one of Almack's early examples which has been undercut so that the head and chest appear to be raised. It also has shoulders and looks very much like the early signature Mouseman mice with front paws. The later signature beavers tend to more rotund and don't have shoulders, they are also not undercut.
The table is a wonderful dark honey colour and has been beautifully adzed to the entire base, which is nice to see. The table top is not adzed.
The condition is good. It has a repair to a very fine natural grain split in the oak to the top. The split is just 3cm long (see picture), not really noticeable - priced accordingly. It also has some faint stains here and there and small chips can be seen on close inspection, including to the top, a few of them have been wax filled, others left. It has a scuff on one end of the table (see picture). Other than that, it just shows the usual wear commensurate with almost 70 years of use.
The table is one of Almack's early pieces, made not long after he left the Mouseman workshop.
The top measures 74 cm x 52 cm. The height of the table is 38 cm. A great Beaverman piece that can also be used as a side table, or even a lamp table.
Colin 'Beaverman' Almack was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He worked for Thompson during the 1940s and 1950s. He set up his own workshop in 1960 and adopted the beaver as his signature.
