Rare to the market, a lovely bespoke Thomas 'Gnomeman' Whittaker hanging corner cupboard / cabinet - circa 1960s. It has been beautifully adzed to the front and sides with carved diamond detail to the top. The signature gnome has been carved to the bottom of the front right-hand side. It has a leaded glazed door with wrought iron hinges and drop handle. Inside the cabinet are two fixed shelves. The oak front and top have a lacquered finish.
 
The condition is good. It is quite a rustic piece, and in some ways, crudely made, as quite a lot of the Gnomeman pieces are. Three holes have been drilled into the back so it can be screwed to the wall with the three old screws that came with the cabinet, likely original to the piece. The top has some wear, and the colour of the oak on the top is a bit uneven. The shelves show quite a lot of wear, they could be cleaned up, though. The bottom shelf also has two drilled holes. Other than that, the condition is consistent with around 60 years of age and use. As with other Gnomeman cabinets that come to the market, it has ply board back panels, which Whittaker often used to cut down on costs.
 
It could be used as a freestanding cabinet rather than as a hanging cabinet, although its original purpose appears to have been as a hanging cabinet.
